Oct. 9, 2014 MEETING

Green ClawWhat is this green lobster claw?

Through gerrymandering, our legislators have been able to pick their voters–rather than having the voters pick their legislators.

How do they do this? By drawing district lines which ensure that certain parties will win.

The result is districts like the Long Island Lobster Claw —the result of a effort to cobble together North Shore Democratic areas with minority/Democratic areas in the center of Nassau County. That big beige area in the middle of the “claw”? That’s heavily Republican.

In November, the voters of New York State have the opportunity to put into place a new procedure for drawing the lines.

This proposal is not without critics, although the League of Women Voters is strongly in favor of the changes.

Join us to learn about the proposal, the source of the controversy, the argument for and against and why the League thinks you should vote yes.
