Greenlawn Firefighter Treated at Huntington Hospital After Battling House Fire
The Greenlawn Fire Department responded to a house fire on Ciro Street, Friday, July 17, 2015 at 11:47 a.m. Greenlawn Fire Chief Kurt Allen was first to arrive on the scene to a heavy smoke condition as flames broke through the roof of the two-story home.
Chief Allen geared up and entered the home to do a primary search, as First Assistant Chief Mike Zeis arrived in the scene. The main body of fire was located on the second floor in the master bedroom. Greenlawn volunteer firefighters began a very aggressive attack on the blaze and were able to contain it to the northeast side of the home.
The Commack Fire Department assisted with an engine, Dix Hills Fire Department with a Rapid Intervention Team, and the Centerport Fire Department provided standby coverage.
One Greenlawn firefighter suffered possible heat exhaustion and was being evaluated at Huntington Hospital. Fifty firefighters were on the scene with five trucks, an ambulance and paramedic unit, and had the fire under control within 40 minutes.
The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze.
