Twenty Nine New Police and Rangers Deployed in Huntington, Criminals Beware

The Town and County have deployed additional resources in Huntington to curb the violence and restore confidence to the community.

What Huntington Town is Doing:

Huntington officials have deployed armed Park Rangers to be assigned to parks in Huntington Station, this Labor Day weekend. The 6 part time Rangers would have peace officer status, which allows them to carry guns, and will patrol parks in Huntington. This new Rangers are part-time and are getting paid $23.53 per hour. The will be patrolling Parks like:

  • Manor Field Park

  • The plaza on New York Avenue and Olive Street.
And many other parks in the town.

The park rangers would also have jurisdiction in the streets surrounding the parks.

The Town stated a separate group of public safety officers will also soon be visible conducting foot patrols along New York Avenue and Depot Road as well.

What the County and SCPD are doing:

Police, Huntington NY,At a meeting last week with Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini and 1st Deputy Police Commissioner – John Barry they both stated “the county has begun to put more resources in Huntington Station, increased patrols, another new Fire Arm Suppression Team, also known as FAST, an “elite” group of officers charged with getting illegal firearms off the street; increased coordination of Second Precinct detectives with FAST, the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and an enhanced strategy to combat narcotics. Bicycle patrols as well”.

Because of the community concerns, the big emphasis of the meeting was to tell theHuntingtonian and the public that SCPD has deployed an additional 23 Police into the community.

An additional FAST (FireArms Suppression Team)team will be provided to the already one formed back in April for Huntington this will include 6 Officers and 2 Detectives. Additional Federal Agencies have been brought into the area for Narcotics, too.

15 More Highway patrol (6) and SAFE officers (9) will be patrolling and be responsible for much more traffic related items like speeding, no inspections or registrations etc. We have already seen the uptick with this group over the Labor Day Weekend. Sobriety checks last Friday netted 8 DWI’s.

But more importantly the 2 FAST teams will be targeting People and Houses where known criminal activity takes places. The message was simple from the Commissioner that we already made big changes in April with additional police and that has not stop the violence so he made an adjustment with 23 more police. “If this plan does not result in capturing and stopping the violence it WILL BE ADJUSTED”, Sini stated.

The commissioner then offered the following advice to criminals, “If you are going to deal drugs and commit acts of violence in the Huntington community, the Suffolk County Police Department is coming for you.”

So for those of you that had questions at the last couple of meetings about the violence our New Commissioner is addressing the issue with different plans of attack as well as our Town Officials.

More has to be done, so help everyone, if you see something say something call 911 or Non-emergencies requiring police response (631) 852-COPS(2677) or Crimestoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
