Whitman Senior Shelbi Wuss Signs with American University

January has been a busy month for Walt Whitman senior Shelbi Wuss. After a nice run in the playoffs for the Lady Wildcat Soccer team this past fall, Shelbi hit the track where she is really at home in the 3000meter run and setting records. The County Track and Field Championships are this Sunday.  News12 is currently profiling her as their Scholar Athlete of the week, where they also announced that Shelbi is Walt Whitman’s Valedictorian for the Class of 2017.

Right on the heels of a respectable showing in the recent Suffolk County Science Bowl, word is just in that she is our January Athlete of the Month, but even that is not why we’re here today. Turns out that Shelbi and her proud Mom and Dad made time for a special announcement recently. Flanked by a couple of her coaches, the principal and athletic director, Shelbi signed her letter of intent to run track for the Eagles of American University in Washington DC next fall.

Proud Mom and Dad flank their high-achieving senior as (l-r) Athletic Director Dr. Jim Wright, Track Coaches Steve Savage and Rob Conroy and Whitman Principal John Murphy are all on hand to congratulate this exceptional young lady. (Track Coach Rufus Shepard was unavailable for the photograph).
