Bright Northport Students Shine in Scholarship Competition
Three Northport High School seniors were recently named finalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Gabriella Bica, Zachary Melchione and Sophie Testa are among 15,000 students that have advanced from semifinalist to finalist.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that recognizes those who score highly on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 1.6 million students participate each year and their results on the test determine their advancement into the competition.
As finalists, Bica, Melchione and Testa will continue on for the opportunity to receive one of three types of National Merit Scholarships and be among the 7,500 winners. These include National Merit $2,500 scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships and college-sponsored scholarships.
To earn the finalist distinction, each student submitted a scholarship application that contained their academic record, school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and awards that they have received.
“It’s a great honor for all of us to receive this award,” said Melchione. “It’s a great representation of the work we put in throughout our high school careers.”
