Firefighters Battle Melville House Fire

The Melville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Catherwood Crescent, Friday, March 10, 2017, at about 6 p.m. Melville firefighters made an aggressive attack on the blaze and were assisted by crews from the Huntington Manor, Dix Hills, Plainview and East Farmingdale fire departments. Fifty firefighters using seven trucks battled the blaze which was brought under control within an hour, under the command Chief Jason Bernfeld and Assistant Chiefs Chris Nolan and David Kaplan.

The Melville Rescue Squad had four ambulances and a paramedic unit on the scene for EMS support. The homeowner, an elderly man, was transported to Huntington Hospital with smoke inhalation by the Melville Rescue Squad. A Melville firefighter was transported to Plainview Hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.  The fire caused significant damage to the home, and the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Town of Huntington Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze.
