Huntington Young Republicans Honor April Students of the Month
The Huntington Young Republicans launched their Student of the Month Program in February 2017 to help engage local high school students in the process of politics and government. In April, the organization recognized two students: Leigh McDermott and Victoria Thurer.
Leigh McDermott is a freshman at Portledge High School in Locust Valley, and resides in Cold Spring Harbor. Over the years, Leigh has become involved in several philanthropic organizations including the local Key Club, Save the Children Action Network, and her church’s youth group. She participates in clean-ups, turkey giveaways, and many events to help better the community in which she lives. Leigh stated, “I was not expecting an honor of this sort, but I am so glad my efforts were recognized in the community. A huge thank you to Sam and everyone in the town of Huntington.”
Victoria Thurer is a senior at Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington, and resides in Melville. Victoria takes pride in her high school, and is an active student leader on campus. She is involved with the leadership program, a member of the National Honor Society, and frequently volunteers for Top Soccer which is a community based organization for young athletes with disabilities. Victoria explained, “I am honored to have received this award from the Young Republicans Club. I am looking forward to getting more involved within the organization.”
