The Centerport Fire Department responded to a rescue call at the Centerport Yacht Club on Beach Plum Drive on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 3:05 p.m.  According to Police Officials the 12 year old was taking boating lessons at the Centerport Yacht Club in Northport Harbor when the accident occurred.

Police Officials stated: “Three students, all of whom were wearing life jackets, were participating in a sailing lesson in Centerport when their boat was intentionally capsized as part of the lesson. Two of the students remained with the boat and a third, a 12-year-old boy, was in the water during the exercise. The instructor, who was in a Zodiac boat, pulled the boy from the water into his boat. The boy then fell out of the Zodiac and was struck by the boat’s propeller. The instructor pulled the boy back into the boat and performed CPR until EMTs arrived. The boy was subsequently pronounced dead.” – Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers

Over a dozen Centerport Fire Rescue personnel responded with an ambulance and paramedic unit to assist the victim, who was transported to Huntington Hospital by the Centerport Rescue Squad. Units were under the direction of Second Assistant Chief Andrew Heglund.
