Massive Car Fire at Avalon in Melville, Quick Thinking Firemen Save Complex
The Melville Fire Department responded to reports of a car fire at the Avalon Court Apartments on Court North Drive, on Wednesday, August 9, 2017. at about 7:40 p.m. First arriving units found an active fire in a car parked up against the garage of the Avalon complex. Three trucks, three ambulances and a paramedic responder were dispatched with 25 fire/rescue personnel.
Quick thinking and Assisting Melville firefighters was a nearby Suffolk Police Emergency Services truck that hooked up a chain and pulled the burning car away from the building.
Crews quickly extinguished the blaze which melted part of the siding and soffit on the building. Firefighters checked the building and there was no extension and only superficial damage to the exterior. The incident was under the command of Chief Jason Bernfeld, and Assistant Chiefs Chris Nolan and David Kaplan. There were no injuries reported. During the alarm, the Dix Hills Fire Department handled another call for Melville for a reported gas leak at a residence on Sleepy Lane.
