Statement from the Suffolk County Police Department Regarding Terrorism Related Event in NYC

The Suffolk County Police Department is closely monitoring intelligence regarding the explosion that occurred near the Port Authority bus terminal in New York City earlier this morning. We are in close contact with the FBI, NYPD and the MTA regarding this incident.  Preliminary indications are that this was a terrorism related event. Out of an abundance of caution the Suffolk County Police Department will be increasing our presence at transportation facilities, including LIRR stations, in close cooperation with the MTA Police, while we await further information on this incident.  The public should expect to see an additional police presence in these areas.  There is no current, credible information of an increased threat to Suffolk County.  The department’s augmented presence is meant as a deterrent, as well as to reassure commuters that they are safe and that they should continue their daily routine without fear. We ask our residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to our department by calling 9-1-1.
