Conte Urges LIRR To Update Emergency Systems After Lightning Derails Operations

Assemblyman Jim Conte (R,I,C,WF-Huntington Station) today called on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to update its emergency communications after an electrical issue caused by lightning disabled the system and left thousands of straphangers stranded at Penn Station and aboard trains.

“The LIRR needs to rethink and retool its emergency-communications system after the catastrophic shutdown of one of the nation’s busiest train stations caused passengers to be stranded for hours with very little information on what had occurred.

“The lack of preparedness and planning for such an occurrence is truly exasperating to me both as a lawmaker and a Long Island resident, especially when considering that Long Island had just endured a tropical storm. I urge the MTA to implement upgrades and new maintenance procedures in order to prevent this type of problem from happening again.

“I hope this disaster will send a message to the MTA/LIRR that preparedness for the health and safety of their passengers must be at the forefront of their daily operations.”
