Stephen Labate, a Republican running for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District, has called on six-term Congressman Steve Israel to stand with him in condemning the recent assault on our religious freedom by HHS. “This abuse of power not only imposes its will on the country but directly subverts the free exercise of religion granted by the First Amendment”, said Labate.
Kathleen Sebelius, HHS Secretary, recently announced that under the new Health Care Reform Law, religious affiliated employers are now mandated to purchase insurance policies that violate their faith or be subject to pay enormous fines. In reply to that announcement Stephen Labate stated, “This is an outrageous attack on religious freedom and is one more black eye for Congressman Steve Israel who was one of President Obama’s biggest advocates for pushing through his 2009 Health Care Reform Law.
Labate went on to say, “We have an administration today that has sued states for enforcing their own state laws, is being sued by 26 states for imposing Obama-care upon them and is being investigated for trafficking guns into Mexico without the knowledge of the Mexican government. This HHS “Mandate” is perhaps the most egregious as it attacks one of the most basic tenets on which our country was founded.
“Congressman Israel was a major advocate for Obama-care and voted for its passage”, said Labate, “I ask Congressman Israel to join me and religious leaders of all faiths who have voiced opposition to the unconstitutional mandate”.
The candidate went on to say, “Many have labeled this as a battle between the Catholic Church and the Obama Administration but, in reality, this battle is joined by all religions, Jewish, Protestant and Muslim, in a fight to protect their First Amendment rights”.
“Changes in leadership are desperately needed in Washington, DC and New York’s CD-2,” Labate said. “The American people need to know that their liberties and freedoms are being protected. Congressman Israel’s silence on this matter and others speaks volumes to the voters on Long Island. When elected my voice will be heard loudly when our liberties and freedoms are threatened”.

You complain that the Federal Government is imposing their laws on the states. If you knew the Constitution you would know that Federal law supersedes state law. This is known as the supremacy clause. You are grabbing at straws here.
Article VI Clause 2 of the Constitution reads:
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Law of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
With regard to your claim about the President battling the Catholic Church you might like to know that a majority of Americans, and nearly 60 percent of Catholics, agree that employees should be required to provide workers with health coverage that includes contraception and birth control, according to a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute. How do you expect to win without women supporting you?
Facts appear to be a terrible thing for you because they do not support your views.
Even the front runner for the Republican presidential nomination gets in on the act when he claims that as president, Mitt Romney says he would free states from the law’s requirements with an executive order on his first day in charge, even though he would have no authority to do so. A president cannot overturn a law with an executive order.
