Students of Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District enthusiastically kicked off the Walk for a Wish fundraising drive. Walk for a Wish is an annual Harborfields event that benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For the fifth consecutive year, participants of the event are invited to raise donations and walk around the track at Harborfields High School. This year’s Walk for a Wish will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 9 a.m.
All of the donations collected for the walk will be used to grant the wish of a child who is suffering with a form of kidney cancer. Make-a-Wish Foundation volunteer Michele Levine told students that their collected efforts will allow for Annette and her family to take a Mediterranean cruise, something young Annette has always wanted to do.
Since the inception of the event, the Washington Drive community has raised over $50,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and has provided such wishes as a trip to the Super Bowl, a Disney cruise, a drum kit, and opportunities for some children to meet their favorite athletes.
During the kickoff assembly, Washington Drive students explored a variety of ways to raise money for the cause. Additionally, students decorated the school hallways with posters designed to encourage participation.
“Our students are so enthusiastic about the cause,” explained second-grade teacher Diane Brown, who co-coordinates the event with teacher Kathleen Taylor and the Acts of Kindness Committee, as well as the Harborfields PTA. “They recognize that even at a young age, they can really make a difference in someone’s life.”
