Summer Arts Program For Huntington Students

Filed under: Around Town,Huntingtonian Junior |

Registration has resumed for the summer arts enrichment program in the Huntington School District now that the Huntington Arts Council has stepped up and agreed to become the program’s sponsor.

Classes will be held at Huntington High School from 8-11:50 a.m. from June 25 through July 20. (No classes will be held July 4 in observance of Independence Day.)

Participants can register for up to four classes, which run Monday through Friday. Students entering grades 4-9 are eligible for the summer program. Registration for classes is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Students from surrounding school districts are also welcome, provided they supply their own instrument for music related classes.

There is a $110 fee for each course, which includes all supplies and Huntington Arts Council t-shirt. A $50 non-refundable registration fee will also be assessed to cover course materials.

Detailed course descriptions and registration information is available on the Huntington School District’s website at www.hufsd.edu. The brochure and daily schedule can be accessed by clicking on the Arts tab and then on the link for summer programs.

The Huntington Arts Council stepped in as the program’s sponsor when OOMPAH (Organization of Music Parents of Huntington) was unable to continue in its longtime sponsorship role.

“We really want to thank Diana Cherryholmes and the Arts Council staff for coming to the rescue,” said Joan R. Fretz, Huntington’s district director of fine and performing arts. “They have taken on a great deal of work to make this happen for our children.”

This year’s music course line-up includes: Computer Music Composing, Beginning and Intermediate Piano (grades 4-9), Beginning Guitar (grades 5-9), School of Rock (grades 5-9), Intermediate Orchestra (grades 5-6), Intermediate Band (grades 5-6), Jazz Band and Improv (grades 6-9), Beginning String Lessons, Beginning Band Lessons, Finley Band (grades 7-9), New Wave Orchestra (grades 7-9), Glee Club (grades 4-9), Vocal Master Class (grades 4-9), Musical Theater and Percussion Ensemble (grades 5-9.)

Visual art classes will also be offered including Ceramics, Jewelry Making, Project Runway, Jr., Character Creations, 3D Design, Paint and Pixels and Puppetry: On TV and on Stage!, The Art of Paper Sculpting and Polymer Clay.

The district does not provide flutes, clarinets or trumpets. These instruments may be rented or leased from local music stories. Information is available in the program brochure posted on the website. (Students qualifying for a free lunch are provided with district owned instruments at no charge for the first year of instruction.)

To register for the program, return a check in the appropriate amount payable to Huntington Arts Council along with the registration form to: Huntington Arts Council, Summer Arts Enrichment Program, 213 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743.
