Update: Swimming advisory lifted for area beaches.
Suffolk County Department of Health Services is advising residents to avoid bathing at 60 area beaches after heavy rainfall Monday may increase the potential that bacterial levels will exceed state standards.
After a storm event there are increased bacteria in our waterways due to storm water runoff.
This applies to many area beaches including all of the Town of Huntington Beaches.
The county recommends residents avoid bathing and other water contact until two successive tide cycles have occurred after the end of the rainfall.
