Men Rescued From Overturned Sailboat
On Tuesday, July 24th at approximately 6:30 pm Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued three men from the Long Island Sound four minutes after their sailboat overturned and sank in Huntington.
The men were in a 23-foot Pierson sailboat when a heavy gust of wind overturned the boat in the Long Island Sound, 300 yards north of Target Rock, at approximately 6:30 p.m. A man that was in his backyard on Sea Crest Dive, Lloyd Harbor, witnessed the boat overturning. The witness put out a VHF notification and called 911. Marine Bureau Officers Charles Marchiselli and Michael O’Leary heard the VHF notification and responded within three minutes from the time of the call. All three men were rescued and out of the water one minute after officers arrived.
The boat’s operator, Stephen Cozey, 22, of Syosset, and his two passengers, Matt Kruger, 22, of Syossett, and Trevor Howard, 21, of Key West, Florida, were not injured. They were not wearing life jackets.
Officials from the U.S. Coast Guard and Huntington Harbormaster also responded.
