Update: Douglas Caldwell, 47, of Layne Way, Northport, has been identified as the man who was critically injured after he lost control of his 2005 Nissan in Hauppauge early this morning.

Suffolk County Police Fourth Squad detectives are investigating a crash in Hauppauge that critically injured a Northport man early this morning.
Fourth Precinct patrol officers responded to a 911 call after witnesses reported seeing a 2005 Nissan traveling eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge at 4:10 a.m. when the vehicle lost control and entered the center divider. The vehicle struck a tree, overturned and crashed. Officers and witnesses attempted to pull the driver, a male, out of the vehicle, but were unsuccessful. Firefighters from the Commack Fire Department responded and pulled the driver from the car.
The driver was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. His identification is being withheld pending notification of kin.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
