The budget proposal by the Assembly Majority failed to deliver for our local children. Despite countless pleas from within our community and beyond, our children’s future continued to be the focus of the budget knife. We deserve better and the future of our children shouldn’t hang in the balance.
For this reason, and this reason alone I could not in good conscience support this proposal. The budget put forward by the Majority included many positive attributes which I hope will be included in the final budget process. We must support those with developmental disabilities. We must provide tax relief for our citizens. We must encourage economic development. But we cannot do all these things at the expense of our children.
It is important to remember that Assembly’s resolution was just that, a proposal. As we continue through the budget process, I will remain an advocate for our community and especially for Long Island’s children. We need the school funding, economic development support and real relief from burdensome property taxes Long Island families and job creators deserve.
