All it took was a phone call from Sandy stricken Far Rockaway Little League to start the ball rolling in Commack. Community resident and firefighter Wayne Forte received a call from Far Rockaway Little League Coach Marc Bacchus, who was wondering if Commack could lend a hand in replacing some equipment for the children. Hurricane Sandy washed away or damaged most of the Little League equipment, and the season was about to begin. Wayne contacted Commack’s Coordinator of Community Relations, Debbie Virga, and the two of them took up the challenge immediately.
Students of all ages gathered their new and used equipment for the donation. One particular student, sixth grader Stephanie Schneider, collected from her Commack North Little League and her Bandit Travel Teammates.
The following items were collected and personally bought to Far Rockaway by Mr. Forte:
37 Helmets
5 Catchers Masks
64 bats
52 Baseball gloves
27 Baseball pants
26 pairs of baseball socks
11 bat bags
21 catcher gear sets
18 jerseys
25 pairs – batting gloves
8 buckets of baseballs
48 pairs of cleats
