A Suffolk County police officer revived a man who overdosed on drugs in Commack early this morning.

Second Precinct Police Officer Joseph Mango responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting that a 22- year-old man was unconscious and not breathing. When Officer Mango arrived, he found the man was unresponsive and was in respiratory distress. A syringe was found near the victim.

Officer Mango administered a dose of intranasal Narcan and the victim regained consciousness. The victim was transported by Commack Volunteer Ambulance to Huntington Hospital.

The Suffolk County Police Department is participating in the New York State Department of Health pilot program involving the deployment of intranasal Narcan, a prescription drug used to reverse opiate overdoses. Currently, the program is being used by officers in all Suffolk County precincts, Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section.
