Dear Neighbors,
Halesite Fire Department’s 2013 recruitment drive is under way, and as the Marine saying goes, we still need a few good men and women. Local residents who were thinking about volunteering with the Halesite Fire Department should act now.
People often ask me, “What kind of people volunteer at Halesite?” The answer usually surprises them. Yes, a few of our volunteers are FDNY professional firefighters. But the vast majority of us are science teachers, grandfathers, accountants, young mothers, college professors, insurance executives, financial advisors, high school seniors, landscapers, college students, real estate brokers, carpenters, crane operators, commodities traders, homemakers, attorneys, painters, retirees from many industries, and even a funeral director. We’re people just like you, and we’re looking for men and women age 18 and older who are willing to help their neighbors with fire and/or rescue services. We are especially in need of volunteers who are around during the daytime.
The other question I get a lot is, “Why volunteer?” All I can say is that there is a tremendous feeling of pride when you come to another person’s aid during a time of need. But there are other benefits too. We offer access to department sports like golf and softball. We sponsor numerous family events throughout the year. And we offer the opportunity to receive tax deductions, a modest pension, as well as life insurance and other fringe benefits.
You can join to ride the ambulance, be a firefighter, or both. No experience is necessary. We will train and equip you to provide these services.
For more information you’re invited to attend an Open House event set up exclusively for people who want to know more. It will be held at the firehouse on Saturday, June 15th, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. During the visit, local residents will meet with current volunteers, take a tour of the firehouse, and have the opportunity to check out actual firefighting and rescue equipment.
If you plan to stop by, please give us a call at 631-427-1910 or by going to Halesitefd.org If you can’t make it to our Open House, call anyway. I’ll try to set up a personal meeting with you.
Hope to see you soon,
Dan McConnell
Chief of Department
