Dear Supervisor Petrone:
We are deeply concerned for the future fiscal stability of the town and Northport-East Northport School District in view of the recent letter sent to Huntington by New York State regarding the Long Island Power Authority’s tax certiorari against the town.
We urge you in the strongest possible terms to open a dialogue with the state and LIPA which would lead to LIPA’s paying their fair and reasonable share of taxes for the Northport power plant.
In view of the fact that the potential fiscal impact on the town and school district could ultimately exceed seven hundred million dollars, we believe that active, constructive discussion with the state and LIPA is critical.
We understand that a number of meetings have already been held regarding this matter. We have been neither notified nor invited to participate in any of these meetings thus far. We want you to keep Councilman Cook and I informed of the town’s activities in this matter going forward, including being copied on all correspondence and emails.
We stand ready to work with you to avoid this potential fiscal catastrophe and to work toward a settlement that will ensure that LIPA pays its appropriate share of taxes to the town and school district.
Sincerely,
Councilman Mayoka & Councilman Cook
