(Lauren) Mackenzie Sanborn, an eighth-grader at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District, has been nominated for the Prudential Spirit of Community Service Award. This is the largest youth program in the country to recognize outstanding community volunteers, and Mackenzie is the top honoree at OMS. She has now progressed to the state level of the competition. If selected as the top state-level candidate, Mackenzie will receive $1,000 in awards and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Mackenzie earned her school’s nomination by volunteering her time at the Ronald McDonald House and the Zakiri Nursery and Primary School in Tanzania, Africa. “I volunteer because it’s the right thing to do,” she said. “When I volunteer, all I think about is the fact that it will benefit someone who needs it more than I do.”
Mackenzie is pictured with her schoolmates (back, from left) Michael Panariello (grade 6), Kate Dahlman (grade 6), (front, from left) Zoe Krief (grade 6) and Deanna Confessore (grade 8), who received honorable mention recognition in the competition.
