Eighth-grade students in Christy Roxo’s family and consumer sciences class at Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently took third place in the Gingerbread Competition hosted by the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society.
The students created a gingerbread structure replicating 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. Before constructing the gingerbread landscape, they researched the history and design of the location. They also used their math and science skills to sketch their designs and complete the structure with “stained glass” Jolly Rancher windows and cookie trees that framed the famous ice-skating rink and Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.
“This was a fun project,” said student Jocelyn Early. “We all had to work together because each group had a responsibility that affected the outcome. This was more than just making gingerbread – we were like architects!”
