About Project HOPE

Project HopeProject H.O.P.E. is a community ministry that began in 2004. It was founded by the youth of St Hugh’s Parish to help the hungry in the Huntington Station area. A large population of laborers exists who are without steady employment. They gather each morning with the hope of finding work for the day. During the winter, there are few opportunities for work. This leaves the workers not only without money but in need of food. Based on this need, the volunteers came up with the concept of a mobile kitchen. Food is prepared on weekends and hot meals are delivered to approximately 80-100 laborers, three days a week from November through April. Our weekday volunteers deliver a hot, healthy meal of soup or chili, sandwiches, water and fruit to the men without work.

The ministry was extended in 2007 to include “Sunday Suppers.” These delicious meals are served twice monthly to families and individuals in the Huntington area. The suppers are prepared and served largely by the youth of St. Hugh’s Parish and many other youth-based organizations. The guests at the meals are invited through Parish Outreach programs, Family Service League and other organizations that help the poor. Many neighboring organizations have since joined our efforts. Hundreds of youth volunteers — recruited from local schools, youth groups, churches, synagogues, scout troops, sports teams, and clubs — generously give their time to help sort, prepare and serve food throughout the year to feed the hungry. Project H.O.P.E. is a 100% volunteer organization that does not have one paid employee.
