Vanderbilt Museum Offers Winter-Recess Children’s Workshops

Vanderbilt Creative ProjectsWhen schools break in mid-February for winter recess, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Education Department will offer fun, creative workshops for children (Pre-K and Grades K-3).

Advance registration is required for all workshops, and a discount is given for registering early. Please call (631) 854-5539 to register.

Grades 1-3 Workshops
10:00 to 1:00 – Bring lunch. Early registration is $30 per child/per workshop; $35 per child/per workshop if registering after February 10. Members receive a discount.

Monday, February 17 – Arctic Animal Paint-Resist Scene
Visit the wildlife dioramas and make your own winter scene using paint-resist technique.

Tuesday, February 18 – Mummy Beads
Learn about life in ancient Egypt and create a unique piece of jewelry.

Wednesday, February 19 – Marine Life Watercolor Illustration
In the Hall of Fishes, learn about the Museum’s first curator and create a watercolor painting.

Thursday, February 20 – Polar Opposites Clay Figure and Diorama
Visit the wildlife dioramas and create a clay sculpture and habitat of a polar animal.

Friday, February 21 – Bear Mask
Listen to a Native story in the wildlife dioramas and create a mask.

Pre-School Workshops
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Open to children ages 3 and 4 with a parent or caregiver. Early registration is $15 per child/per workshop; $20 per child if registering after February 10. Members receive a discount.

Monday, February 17 – Winter Wonderland Snow Globe
Visit the wildlife dioramas and make a wintry snow globe.

Wednesday, February 19 – Penguin Sculpture
Visit the bird collection, learn about penguins, and make a paper sculpture.

Friday, February 21 – Polar Bear Mask
Hear a Native story in the wildlife dioramas, and make a mask.

For additional program information call (631) 854-5552. The Museum reserves the right to cancel any workshop not meeting the minimum attendance requirement. Cancellation policy: Refunds will be issued up to seven days before the start of a workshop. A workshop credit will be issued for cancellations made within seven days of the workshop.

Winter Hours – Museum and Mansion
Through April 1: The Museum and Mansion are open Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. The Museum and Mansion are closed on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Winter Hours – Charles and Helen Planetarium
Through April 1: The Planetarium is open Tuesday, Friday (nights only), Saturday and Sunday, with the first Saturday and Sunday show at noon and the last at 4:00-see schedule below. The Planetarium is closed on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Observatory – Year-round viewing of the night sky (weather permitting), Friday only, 9:00-10:00 (free with show ticket; $3.00 without show ticket)

Black Holes: Journey into the Unknown
This exciting new program presents the latest information about the fascinating, extreme world of black holes. Witness what would happen if you got too close to one and see how a black hole is able to warp time and space. Produced in Australia by Melbourne Planetarium, Scienceworks Museum and Museum Victoria.

SPECIAL DAYTIME SCHEDULE
Museum and Planetarium open 12:00 to 4:00 (but last tour and last Planetarium show of the day begin at 4:00). Guided Mansion tours on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 12:30, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. On Tuesdays, mansion tours are given at 12:30, 1:30 and 3:00.

Museum Admission
General museum admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students with ID and seniors (62 and older), and $3 for children 12 and under. General admission includes estate-grounds access to the Marine Museum, Memorial Wing natural-history and ethnographic-artifact galleries, Nursery Wing, Habitat Room, Egyptian mummy and Stoll Wing animal-habitat dioramas. For a mansion tour, add $5 per ticket. (A video tour of the mansion is available on request.)

Mansion Tours
Guided tours of the Vanderbilt Mansion — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — are available Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00.

Planetarium Admission
During the day, visitors to the Planetarium pay general museum admission ($7 for adults, $6 for students with IDs and seniors 62 and older, and $3 for children 12 and under), plus $5 each for a Planetarium show. Since the museum is closed in the evening, no general museum admission is charged – visitors pay only for Planetarium show tickets: $9 for adults, $8 for students with IDs and seniors 62 and older, and $7 for children 12 and under.

Vanderbilt Observatory
Night-sky viewing on Friday (weather permitting), 9:00-10:00 p.m. Observation is free to visitors with a planetarium show ticket, $3.00 for those without a show ticket.
