When schools break for spring recess, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Education Department offers fun, creative workshops for children in Pre-K and grades 1-3. Advance registration is required for all workshops, and a discount is given for registering early. Please call (631) 854-5539 to register.
Making creative projects at the Vanderbilt
Grades K-3
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bring lunch. Early registration is $30; after April 6, $35. Members receive a discount.
Monday – April 14 – Mummy Mask
Learn about life in ancient Egypt and create a unique piece of art.
Wednesday, April 16 – Watercolor Collage
Visit the Marine Museum, examine preserved specimens, and create interesting art.
Friday, April 18
Reptile Sculpture and Diorama Visit the collections and create a sculpture and habitat of your favorite reptile.
Preschool Workshops
(Children ages 3 and 4 with a parent or caregiver)
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Early registration is $15; after April 6, $20. Members receive a discount.
Monday – April 14 – Snake Diorama
Visit the wildlife dioramas, touch teeth, horns and tusks, and create a snake habitat.
Tuesday, April 15 – Big Cat Mask
Visit the Wildlife Dioramas and make a mask of your favorite big cat.
Wednesday, April 16 – Butterfly Lifecycle Mobile
Visit the butterfly and moth collection and create a unique piece of art using your fingerprints.
Thursday, April 17 – Recycled Art: Birdhouse
Learn about the feet and bills of birds in the collection,s and make a fun birdhouse out of a recycled
milk carton.
Friday, April 18 – Hand Drum
Visit the Marine Museum, learn about the variety of fish in the oceans, and create a musical instrument.
Grades K-2
Sunday, April 27 – Earth Day Celebration Recycled Art: BottlenoseDolphin Planter
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Learn about whales and dolphins and make a recycled functional piece of art. Early Registration is $25; after April 19, $30. Members receive a discount.
The Museum reserves the right to cancel any workshop not meeting the minimum attendance requirement.
