During the Elwood School District Board of Education meeting on Dec. 9, board members and administrators recognized the accomplishments of the Elwood-John Glenn High School girls varsity volleyball team and cross-country athlete Sofia Condron.

Athletic Director David Shanahan noted that all of the district’s fall athletic teams were recognized as scholar-athlete teams and that determination, team chemistry, belief in team and self, exceptional coaching trust, hard work and more contributed to the volleyball team winning the New York State Class B Championship.

“The memories you have created will last a lifetime, and as you grow older, these young ladies will cherish the memories they have for themselves, their families and the Elwood community,” Shanahan said.

Coached by Nick Tremaroli and Alessia Franco, the girls varsity volleyball team were undefeated and won the league championship, county championship, Long Island Championship and New York State Class B Championship. Team members include Alicia Ancewicz, Philomena Awadalla, Carmela Ciriello, Lauren Conover, Rebecca Costanza, Sarah Koerner, Meghan McGowan, Shannon McGrath, Carly Nichols, Zoe Pando, Abigail Miller, Diana Muniz, Sophia Pelkofsky, Brittany Pham, Shayna Purow, Isabella Ross, Emma Siniscalchi and Danielle Tomasello.

In addition, cross-country athlete Sofia Condron, coached by Patrick Burke, persevered through injuries to place 11th overall in the New York State championship held in Binghamton this fall, earning her All-State honors.

Under the direction of Ryan Beucke and Gabby Caviglia, the high school’s honors wind ensemble gave a stellar performance of holiday music at the start of the meeting. Not only did the student-musicians showcase their talents, they spread holiday cheer amongst the community.
