Finley Student Council Leadership Support Great Causes
The energy and enthusiasm displayed by Huntington Students in the J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s nearly 675 seventh and eighth graders is reflected in the four officers who are vigorously leading the Falcons’ student council this year.
Eighth graders Chris Cordeiro (president), Izzy Scarpati (vice president), Theresa Moreno (secretary) and Emma Petrizzi (treasurer) are working closely with faculty advisors Frank Battista and Matthew Perlongo and pursuing a dynamic agenda.
The student council is selling pink bracelets during lunch periods throughout this week to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The bracelets, which cost $2 each, are emblazoned with the words “Finley Cares” and “Think Pink.”
Finley PTA President Julie LaBella came up with the idea to sell the bracelets and she has been very supportive of the initiative. “The bracelets are selling fast,” Mr. Battista said. “The Finley students and staff have always been passionate about supporting great causes.”
This has been a busy year for the Finley student council and its officers. In late September, the “Fab Four” led a large turnout of Finley students in this year’s Homecoming Day parade. Last week the group participated in a spirited pep rally.
Earlier this week, Finley student council officers feted members of the Huntington School Board during a special ceremony held during the trustees’ Monday night meeting. “This group has also done a great job with the morning announcements,” Mr. Battista said. “They are extremely organized and professional each morning.”
The student council is wrapping up its annual magazine drive, which helps fund the organization’s activities for the year. Several other big events are on the horizon.
“The foursome is looking forward to an action packed year,” Mr. Battista said. Over the next several months the student council will be running more fundraisers and planning the eighth grade dinner dance. Another fun event is also on the drawing board: The first annual Finley talent show is coming soon to the school’s LGI.
