Three Firefighters Hurt, Pet Saved in Dix Hills Blaze
While local fire departments were busy making preparations for the Blizzard that blanketed the area with heavy snow, the Dix Hills Fire Department responded to reports of a house fire on Rustic Gate Lane, Thursday morning, February 7. Dix Hills firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Melville and Greenlawn FD’s, with Huntington Manor FD and Commack Ambulance on standby. The fire appears to have started to the rear of the one-story ranch home and spread up into the attic, where an aggressive attack by firefighters stopped the blaze and minimized damage. Although the home was unoccupied, firefighters saved a pet dog who was uninjured. Three firefighters suffered injuries battling the blaze, and were transported to Huntington Hospital where they were treated and later released. About 45 firefighters with six trucks had the blaze under control within a half hour, under the command of Chief Tom Magno. The fire appears to be accidental in origin, but is under investigation by the Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Fire Marshal.
