Assemblyman Andrew P. Raia Named As 2013 Matinecock District Good Deed Award Honoree

Andrew P. Raia, NYS Assemblyman has been named the 2013 Good Deed Award Honoree by the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Matinecock District. Assemblyman Raia will be honored at a dinner event to benefit the scouting programs of the Matinecock District on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at the Northport Yacht Club (11 Bluff Point Rd, Northport).
Recipients of the Good Deed Award are chosen for their outstanding community service; the commitment, dedication and leadership they provide to worthy philanthropic causes as well as the respect and esteem in which they are held by their colleagues.
“This is an important honor and Andrew is deserving of this recognition. His selection as an honoree is a direct reflection of his commitment to serving others throughout the Huntington community,” said Bill Bohn, Chairman of the Matinecock Good Deed Committee. “His personal and professional dedication is exemplary and can be seen through his accomplishments and leadership within the New York State Assembly as well as his personal involvement within the local community.”
Assemblyman Raia, a native of Huntington, NY, is currently serving his sixth term as Assemblyman in the 12th Assembly District (Huntington, Babylon and Islip). He began his professional career as a leading staff member in legislative offices of the State Assembly, the New York State Senate and the Suffolk County Legislature. He has worked his way to serving as the new Ranking Member of Assembly Health Committee, and is an active member of the Aging, Banks, and Housing Committees. Assemblyman Raia’s long standing commitment to his constituents and tenure within the New York State legislature have helped him become a leader within the Assembly. He is currently serving as the Vice Chair of Minority Conference, the Minority representative on the Legislative Council on Health Care Financing, and a member of the Budget Conference Committee on Health.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Assemblyman Raia is active in the community working with students who are interested in government and law, senior citizens, veterans and promoting healthy living. He is extremely involved within the Huntington community, having served on the Executive Boards of the Huntington Boys and Girls Club, Huntington Freedom Day Care Center, Huntington Station Enrichment Center, Katherine Gibbs, and Perspectives on Youths. He is a member of the Northport Historical Society, the Babylon Historical Society, the Huntington Historical Society and the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Society and belongs to many different social organizations which have deep commitments to community service, including; the Knights of Columbus Father Thomas A. Judge Council in East Northport where he serves as a Third Degree Knight; the Sons of Italy Constantino Brumidi Lodge in Deer Park; the New York State Conference of Italian-American Legislators; and Chambers of Commerce in Huntington, Northport, East Northport, and West Islip. He is an honorary board member for the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Building Homes for Heroes. Assemblyman Raia graduated from the Leadership Huntington Foundation Program and was Long Island Business News’ 2008, 40 under 40 Honoree. He also remains an ongoing advocate for children’s programs including the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America.
The Matinecock District serves 2,700 Scouts in the Huntington and western Smithtown areas, and makes vital contributions to the enrichment of local communities. Matinecock District Scouts perform thousands of hours of community service each year, with Eagle Scout projects alone contributing 10,000 hours to community programs. These important contributions enrich all corners of the Huntington-Smithtown community guided by a volunteer workforce of over 1,000 trained leaders.
