Long Island Science and Engineering Fair Winners
The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair is a two-day competition for the most advanced middle school and high school projects. This year East Woods School students, and Huntington residents, William Benjamin (pictured left) and Alexander Oruci (pictured right) entered their project entitled “MAD MICE.” The young men had listened to several debates over the impact of energy drinks on an individual’s health and decided to observe what effect, if any, energy drink chemicals had on the behavior of mice. The mice reacted differently when given ginseng, taurine, and caffeine which caused some hyperactivity, excessive grooming, and memory loss in the mice. Their research and presentation landed William and Alexander 1st Place in the Science and Engineering Fair in the Middle School category. Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D. (pictured center) presented them with proclamations at the General Meeting of the County Legislature in July for their accomplishments.
