Big Win For Blue Devils Marching Band

The Blue Devil marching band scored a sensational victory last Sunday afternoon as a crowd estimated at more than 2,000 watched. The Huntington High School musicians and color guard members notched a score of 82, the highest in their division in the state this fall.

Coming at their own home show, the victory was a very special one for the Blue Devils. The event was coordinated by the Band Parents Assn., which spent weeks organizing the affair. Dozens of BPA members volunteered to fill countless roles and helped the show run smoothly. “It was a great day for Huntington,” Superintendent James W. Polansky said.

Bands from 11 metropolitan area high schools participated and put on a dazzling display of song and pageantry. “The weather was terrific, the music was great, and it was wonderful to see over 1,000 students who all love marching band,” said Martha Ironman, who serves as co-president of the BPA along with Phil Antonucci. “A special thanks to co-chairpeople Dee Antonucci and Jennifer Petrozzo who did an outstanding job of organizing the event.”

Jason Giachetti and Brian Stellato, co-directors of the Blue Devil band, were very pleased with the performance of their group and offered hearty congratulations to the teenagers. Huntington’s core of 82 was an impressive 4.35 point increase over the band’s tally at its competition a week earlier. The co-directors told the band members that “we are so proud of you all!”

Mrs. Ironman and Mr. Antonucci both offered their thanks to their fellow band parents who stepped up and assumed a variety of roles during the show. More than a few band alumni parents pitched in, too. The overflow crowd of spectators filled Blue Devil Stadium and fanned out along the fencing on either side of the large bleachers.

The Blue Devil band will march in Saturday’s homecoming day parade through Huntington village and up New York Avenue at 12:30 p.m. and then perform its field show at halftime of the homecoming football game at 2 p.m. The band will participate in a New York State Field Band Conference competition at Mineola High School Saturday evening. Huntington will compete in the state championship in Syracuse October 29-31.
