Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a bicyclist last night. On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Buenaventura Sorto Vasquez was riding his bicycle on the shoulder heading northbound on Elwood Road. He entered the roadway and was struck by a 1995 Dodge, driven by Eric Schmidt, at the intersection of Elwood Road and Rocco Drive. The Dodge then struck a pole. Vasquez, 54, was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Schmidt, 19, of Northport, was not injured in the crash.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Anyone with information is asked to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
