South Huntington SD Meet the Candidates Night was held on Wednesday, May 2nd at 7:30PM in the South Cafeteria at Walt Whitman High School. Three of the four candidates attended. During the questioning BOE candidate and current Board member Edward Nitkewicz stated that on Friday, May 4th the teachers union is voting to ratify a contract change that may allow the BOE to be able to restore full day kindergarten.

The crowd of about 100 asked questions of  the candidates.  Topics included busing,  kindergarten and cutting middle school sports. Each of the candidates promised to be fiscally responsible and concerned about the desires of the community. Not surprisingly, most of the questions were based on costs and spending. Discussions took place regarding Albany helping Long Island through mandate relief.  Mandated costs make up the vast majority of school district budgets.
