Four Injured in West Hills Crash
The Huntington Manor Fire Department and Suffolk Police Emergency Services worked to extricate the victims trapped in a Toyota minivan following a head-on crash with an Acura SUV on Round Swamp Road near West Mall Drive in West Hills, at about 10:30 p.m., Thursday, June 21. Rescuers used hydraulic “Jaws of Life” heavy rescue tools to remove the roof and doors of the minivan which contained three occupants. One victim suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center by Suffolk Police medivac helicopter. The remaining two occupants and the driver of the SUV were transported to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. About 50 firefighters and EMS personnel were on the scene with two heavy rescue trucks, two engines, and three ambulances, under the command of Huntington Manor First Assistant Chief Fred Steenson, Jr. An additional engine was dispatched to secure the helicopter Landing Zone at Walt Whitman High School.
