Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a motor vehicle crash in which a motorcyclist lost part of his leg after being struck by a vehicle driven by a man whose driving ability was impaired by drugs.
At approximately 6:30 p.m., on October 14, Raymond Card, 48, of Huntington, was driving his 2000 Yamaha motorcycle northbound on Belmont Avenue in West Babylon when he was struck at the intersection of Van Buren Street by a 2003 Chrysler. The driver of the Chrysler, James Kavanaugh, 22, of West Babylon, was attempting to make a turn from southbound Belmont Avenue onto eastbound Van Buren Street.
Card was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where doctors surgically removed his left leg below the knee. Kavanaugh was arrested and charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while his Ability was Impaired by Drugs. Kavanaugh is scheduled to be arraigned on October 15 at First District Court in Central Islip.
The First Squad Detectives are asking anyone who may have information in regards to this incident to call 631-854-8152.
A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
