Suffolk County Storm Update November 6, 7:00 PM

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services – working closely with the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army – is in the process of consolidating shelters put in place across the county over the last week.

Approximately 80% of those housed in temporary shelters required sheltering as a result of power outages.  As outages are being addressed, and housing resources increasingly become available, the previously urgent need for multiple emergency shelters across the county is diminishing.

Therefore, as of Tuesday, November 6, 2012, all shelters in Suffolk County (except Walt Whitman High School) will be combined into one location at St. Joseph’s College, 155 West Roe Blvd, in Patchogue. As of Wednesday, November 7, 2012, the Walt Whitman High School shelter will be moved to the YMCA at 60 Main Street, Huntington, NY.

Bringing together previously separated resources into fewer facilities will enhance the quality and quantity of shelter and comfort services provided within Suffolk County for those still in need.
