On Thursday, February 14, 2013 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Gloria Montoya was driving a 2013 Honda Accord in the center lane of eastbound LIE east of Exit 51 in Dix hills. Her vehicle was rear-ended by a dump truck that was traveling behind her and attempting to merge onto the right hand lane. The Accord then struck the concrete center divider as well as a 2003 Toyota Solara that was traveling in the HOV lane and a 2005 Dodge Magnum that was traveling in the center lane.
The driver of the Solara, William Broer, 83 from Hauppauge, was airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in serious condition. Montoya, 49, of Harned Road, Commack, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Magnum, Carlos Gonzalez, 35, of 954 Wilson Boulevard, Central Islip, was not injured.
The dump truck that fled the scene is described as a newer-model, clean silver or grey-colored vehicle.
The Accord, Solara and the Magnum were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
