Many of the best ultramarathon runners from all over the United States will be making their way to Caumsett State Park on March 3, 2013 for the Merrell of Huntington Village Caumsett 50 Kilometer Run, which has been designated as the USA Track & Field 50 Kilometer National Championship Run for 2013.

Heading the field will be Joseph Gray of Newcastle Washington, who was the overall winner of the 2012 edition of the Run.  Gray, who was named by USA Track & Field as the Mountain Runner of the Year in 2011,  scored first overall in the 2012 NACAC Mountain Running Championship in West Vancouver, took top honors in the 2012 Scott Corrigan Mountain Trail Run Series and, most recently tied for first place in the December 2012 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship in Hawaii.

Back to challenge Gray will be Michael Wardian of Arlington, Virginia, who holds the course record of 2 hours, 55 minutes, 5 seconds, and had won the Caumsett event for four straight years in 2008-2011 before being beaten  by Gray last year.  In addition to his Caumsett string,  Wardian’s credits include a win at the JFK 50 Miler in Maryland, and a third overall finish in the Marathon des Sables in 23 hours, 1 minute, 3 seconds, the fastest time ever run by an American in that race.  He also won the silver medal in the September 2011 World 100 Kilometer Championship, and was named by the International Association of Ultrarunners as its Athlete of the Year in February of 2011.

Among the most prominent entrants among the women is Christie Nielsen of Omaha, Nebraska, whose 2012 accomplishments included scoring as the first woman overall in the Lean Horse 50 Mile Run, where she beat all but one of the men in the race, and the North Fork Endurance Challenge 50 Kilometer Run.

Suffolk County Legislator Dr. William Spencer will be sounding the horn to start the 50 Kilometer Runners on their way at 8:30 AM, and New York State Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci will be on hand to hold the tape for the winners at the finish line.

“We are thrilled to have the Caumsett Run recognized once again by USA Track & Field as a world class event.” noted Carl Grossbard, who is the Co-Director of the Caumsett Run. “Long Island is becoming increasingly known as a major player on the Ultramarathon stage, and we are pleased that so many of the top ultramarathoners in the country will be on hand for the event.
