Suffolk County Police arrested a Huntington Station couple for endangering the welfare of their three children following a motor vehicle crash yesterday in Greenlawn. Wilver Garcia-Lopez, 28, was driving a 1999 Oldsmobile westbound on South Lane in Greenlawn when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the front stoop of a house on South Lane at approximately 9:05 p.m.
The passengers in the vehicle were Garcia’s wife, Dorita DeGarcia, 25, and their three children, ages two-years-old, six-years-old and eight-years-old. Following the crash, DeGarcia fled the scene with the three children. She ran back to a different house located on South Lane where the family had attended a baby shower earlier.
Garcia-Lopez, of Huntington Station, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15 Years Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law) and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. DeGarcia was also arrested for three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
DeGarcia and her three children were transported to Huntington Hospital via Greenlawn Fire Department Rescue Squad where they were treated for minor injuries. Garcia-Lopez was not injured.
The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, and the investigation is continuing. Garcia-Lopez and DeGarcia will be arraigned today at First District Court in Central Islip.
