Children will find lots of fun and creativity in the summer educational workshops offered by the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. Sessions, for children ages 3-5 and in grades 1-3, run from July 8 through August 16 at the Vanderbilt Education Center.

Children make creative projects in Vanderbilt Museum workshops

All workshops begin with an educator-led tour of the Vanderbilt Museum’s marine-life, natural-history and ethnographic-artifact collections and animal habitats, followed by hands-on creative projects.

Preschool Workshops
Six workshops for children ages 3,4 and 5, accompanied by one adult, will be offered on Wednesdays, 11:00 to 12:30. Fee: $20 per child, $18 for members.

July 10 – Rain Stick
Visit the animal dioramas and make an instrument of the rainforest.

July 17 – Fish Print T-Shirt
Visit the Marine Museum, touch a shark jaw, and design your own shirt using the Japanese Gyotaku technique.

July 24 – Elephant Paper Sculpture
Touch teeth and tusks and make a sculpture using sponge-painted paper.

July 31 – Sailor’s Valentine
Explore the Museum’s shell collection and make a Valentine for someone special.

August 7 – Butterfly Windsock

August 14 – Seashell Wind Chimes
Visit the Marine Museum, touch seashells and corals, and make a chime that will sing all summer.

Workshops for Grades 1-3
This program is offered Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 1:00. Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Fee: $200 per session, $180 for members.

Sail the Seas with Mr. V
Pack your bags for an expedition! Beth Laxer-Limmer, manager of Vanderbilt education programs, said the program is a “fun-filled week of exploration, discovery and creativity. We’ll visit the collections, learn about the fascinating creatures Mr. Vanderbilt encountered and the wondrous places he visited, and have fun creating unique works of art. We’ll also travel to the stars in the newly renovated Planetarium.”

Sessions: July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29- August 2, August 5-9 and August 12-16.
