Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a Melville crash that killed two teenagers from Huntington Station early this morning.
Ray Vega was driving a 1996 Honda northbound on Walt Whitman Road, at a high rate of speed, when he attempted to pass a 1999 Pontiac on the right that was also traveling northbound and operated by Vegas’ brother, Kevin. The Honda sideswiped the Pontiac and Vega lost control of the Honda, struck a curb and then a tree in front of 1800 Walt Whitman Road at 1:14 a.m. Ray Vega and his passenger, Carmen Rivera-Gotay, were trapped in the vehicle, and heavy rescue equipment was needed to remove both victims.
Ray Vega, 18, of Tower St., Huntington Station, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Rivera-Gotay, 17, of Nassau Road, Huntington Station, was transported via a Melville Fire Department ambulance to Plainview Hospital-North Shore where she was pronounced dead. Kevin Vega, 19, also of Tower St., Huntington Station, and his passenger, Isaias Perez, 21, of East 4th St., Huntington Station, were uninjured.
Ray Vega graduated from Huntington High School this year.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.
