EXHIBITIONS AT THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART

Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum

March 29 – April 27

Long Island’s Best is a comprehensive arts-in-education program that integrates experiences in The Heckscher Museum and the high school art classroom, culminating with the presentation of students’ original works juried by a museum professional. The exhibition features approximately 80 works of art by students in grades 9 through 12.  Selected artwork portrays a range of subjects, in many styles and media, including two- and three-dimensional work.  Long Island’s Best is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to exhibit their work in a museum.

This exhibition is sponsored in part by Dr. Inna Gellerman, Gellerman Orthodontics.  Additional exhibition support is provided by RBC Wealth Management.

Rabble-Rousers: Art, Dissent, and Social Commentary

March 29 – April 20

From the daring, abstract “nocturnes” of 19th-century painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler to the bold young Robert Rauschenberg exhibiting an erased Willem de Kooning as art, artists have long been catalysts for change and rebellion. Rabble-Rousers: Art, Dissent, and Social Commentary features works from the Permanent Collection by artists who challenged traditional aesthetics, politics, and social norms. Highlights include prints by Whistler, Rauschenberg, John Sloan, Larry Rivers, and May Stevens; photographs by Larry Fink and Garry Winogrand; and paintings by William Beard and George Grosz, among others.

Picture Perfect: Selections from the Permanent Collection

Ongoing

This exhibition showcases works with appeal to a wide range of aesthetic sensibilities.  Brightly colored, energetic paintings by Stuart Davis, George D. Green, Richard Hennessy, and Wayne Gonzales provide vibrant contrast to evocative landscapes by Ralph Albert Blakelock, Jerome Blum, and Matthew Spender.  Also on view are figure paintings by George Grosz and Florine Stettheimer, as well as the oldest painting in the Museum’s collection, Lucas Cranach’s Virgin, Child, St. John the Baptist and Angels, which has been recently conserved, revealing subtle coloring and detail not previously perceptible.

Editor’s Note:

The Heckscher Museum of Art, founded in 1920 by August Heckscher, serves the people of the Town of Huntington and surrounding communities. Through exhibitions of its permanent and loan collections of art and related programs, it seeks to provide inspiring and transformative educational experiences to encourage a broader understanding of our past and present and enrich the quality of life of the individuals it serves. The Museum’s Permanent Collection contains more than 2,200 works from the early 16th century to present. For information about The Heckscher Museum of Art, visit www.heckscher.org.
