Susan B. Phillips is an award winning artist who resides in New York City and Woodstock, NY.
She is an active member of the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum and a participating member and Gallery Coordinator of the National Association of Women Artists in New York City. Her self-expression is manifested through the art forms of photography and mixed media collage. She also experiments with monotypes and paints, working abstractly with both.
When Susan photographs, she chooses the elements that she wishes to freeze in time. It is conscious decision to arrange or capture natural lines, graphically appealing patterns, or the particular interplay of texture light and shadow. Aesthetic possibilities can be found in the random placements of objects, in a pile of discarded junk, or on pieces of building facades that have been cast away in demolition.
This process is inverted in her collage work. Instead of the whole work, she starts with two or three components, and proceeds to manipulate them until an interesting unit begins to evolve. Creating something visually exciting from unrelated preexisting objects, each with its own texture and dimensionality, is the challenge.
Ms. Phillips’ photographs have been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum of Art (NY), the Bergen County Museum (NJ), the Belskie Museum of Art (NJ), and the Coos Art Museum (OR).
