Greenlawn FD Takes 1st Place In 7th Annual Chuck Varese Tournament

Greenlawn Fire Department took home first place in the 7th Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament. Twenty- one teams from fire departments across Long Island showed up to compete this past Saturday. Teams were judged on the amount of time it took to complete the extrication, as well as how they handled the equipment and the safety features followed. The tournament is organized by Robert Varese a former Northport fire chief and held in memory of his son, Chuck Varese, a Northport fireman who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2008. Gershow Recycling Center donated 30 cars to the event which allows volunteer firefighters the opportunity to practice life – saving skills.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Suffolk County Burn Center.
