Particle Fever

Sunday, May 18 at 2 pm

Post-screening panel of Brookhaven Lab and StonyBrookUniversity scientists involved in this quest and other “big science” experiments; plus a live video feed with Brookhaven scientists at the ATLAS experiment in Geneva, Switzerland (where the Higgs particle was discovered).

Particle Fever follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation. As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries joined forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter. But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse NowThe English Patient), Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

With a post-screening panel of Long Island scientists, “Particle Fever” screens in the Science On Screen series on Sunday, May 18 at 2 pm at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington, NY. 631-423-7611.

$10 Members / $15 Public / Includes reception. Tickets can be purchased online, www.CinemaArtsCentre.org at the box office during theater hours or by calling Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006.

“This movie about one of the greatest scientific ventures in history is a mind blower.” – Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES

Imagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. Particle Fever gives audiences a front row seat as scientists take crucial steps in discovering the origin and substance of the universe.
