Crime always seems to escalate in the summer months in Huntington Station. Recently residents in Huntington Station claim to hear gun shots. Most recently on August 3, 2014 2nd Precinct police officers responded to a Shot Spotter activation on East 2nd Street in Huntington Station. Responding personnel could not substantiate whether or not it was an actual gunshot.
Local residents who did not want to be named believe that the violence is related to gang activity. Below is a recap of three murders that have recently occurred in the area. The murder on July 5, was believed to be a domestic dispute. The incident is still related to the larger problem because the property it occurred on has been a concern to area residents in terms of code violations and over-occupancy issue for years.
One Dead, One Injured After Huntington Station Shooting
On Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at approximately 9:35 p.m. a group of people were gathered outside of 84 East 9th Street, Huntington Station. A man fired a number of shots at the group.
Daniel Carbajal, 25, of Huntington Station, who was shot in the head, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. Anthony Napolitano, 21, of Huntington Station, was taken via Huntington Community Ambulance to Huntington Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury to his leg. No one else was injured in the shooting.
The suspect, who was described as a dark-skinned male, fired two more shots at the house and then fled on foot southbound on Varney Avenue.
Second Precinct police officers responded to a 911 call. Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigation.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
Murder On Pius Rental Property
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Huntington Station man on July 5, 2014.
Second Precinct police officers responded to 91 Wyman St. at 4:25 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a disturbance. When officers arrived, they found Larry Collins, who lives at the home, on the front lawn with injuries to his abdomen following a physical altercation.
Collins, 38, was transported to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In 2011, local citizens brought this property to the attention of town public safety department. Concerns included code violations and over occupancy. Community Properties LP, Catco Associates LP and a few other named companies, all controlled by Donald Pius owns approximately 90 rental properties in Huntington Station and Huntington. At last tally Pius owned companies were collecting approximately $1,200,000 dollars in HUD money annually for these rentals.
On July 7, Kutima Glover (pictured above), 33, of 91 Wyman Ave., Huntington Station, was arrested in connection with the death of Larry Collins. Glover was charged with Manslaughter 1st Degree. She was held at the Fourth Precinct and was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on July 7.
Man Stabbed to Death in Huntington Station
On June 28, at approximately 9:38 p.m., Second Precinct police officers responded to a 911 caller who reported that a man had been stabbed at 14-19 New York Avenue in Huntington Station.
When officers arrived they found 38 year old Luis Ramos-Rodriguez lying on the ground with a stab wound. Ramos-Rodriguez, of Huntington Station, was taken by Huntington Community First Aid Squad to Huntington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are continuing the investigating and an autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
