Schools in South Huntington opened for the 2014-2015 school year on Tuesday, and Mother Nature decided it was finally time to deliver some heat and humidity. Each week over the summer, you could hear the conversations about the incredibly good weather, and after last winter, we deserved it.

So, seemingly grateful for the weather that preceded the current warm spell, our students, teachers, and staff shrugged off the perspiration and welcomed one another back to what looks to be a great year ahead.

Our kindergartners were joined by their parents for the annual bus ride to school and home again. The look of excitement and anticipation on our new kindergarten students’ faces was truly priceless. The caring staff at Countrywood and Oakwood made sure each family found their way to the right classroom, and they settled in for an orientation before boarding their busses home. The transitional process of letting go of Mom and Dad’s hands is made smoother with this opening-day bus ride.

Our first and second graders were smooth operators as they entered their familiar school, greeting friends and teachers after the summer break. At Birchwood and Maplewood, and at Silas Wood, Stimson Middle School, and Walt Whitman High School, students, teachers, and staff greeted one another and friends new and old as they began an exciting new year.
