Melville volunteer firefighter and EMT Isaac Vargas was in the right place at the right time when a woman’s hair and blouse caught fire from a Sterno food heater at a Pool Club on Westbourne Lane on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at about 6:30 p.m. Vargas quickly sprung into action and rolled the victim onto the ground and extinguished the flames. Vargas began first aid treatment and Melville Fire Department Rescue Squad personnel soon arrived with two ambulances and a paramedic unit, under the direction of Assistant Chief David Kaplan.  The 58-year-old woman suffered burns on her hand, arm, neck and shoulder and was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center.
